Happy April Fool’s Day; if you are into that….
I am currently working on knives for the Blade Show. Last week, I finished a Persian styled fighter. This knife has a damascus steel blade in a “Dog Star” pattern. The guard is a double quillion, made of twist damascus. The handle material is walrus ivory. I haven’t shot pictures of this knife yet, but will try to get that done and post photos on the web site.
I am working on some new “Bird and Trout” knives. These will be small hunter/skinner knives. They are forged from 1095 carbon steel and will have full tangs. The handle material is Dymondwood, in various color patterns. I intend for these knives to be lower priced (and more affordable) than my larger hunters, so I am working to develop a production process to minimize the amount of time required to make them. So far, I am a little disappointed that they are taking longer than I had hoped to make them. I have seven of them in process and this first bunch will have some minor design variations, as I am trying out different techniques on them. I still have some things to try out on them; so hopefully, I will soon have a process worked out to help me build them efficiently.
Other knives that I am planning to make for the Blade Show are a slip joint folder with abalone handle scales and a Cimarron Model hunter with a feather pattern damascus blade.
I recently purchased a hydraulic forging press. With this press, I expect to be able to make more intricate damascus patterns, like the feather pattern, as well as mosaic damascus.
I will be having surgery done on my left eye on April 2nd. Old age is creeping up on me and I have developed cataracts. My eyes have been causing me problems for the last several years, so I am happy to finally have something done about my vision. My left eye is much worse than my right, but it is my dominant eye, so they are just going to fix it. I passed the Master Smith test with messed up vision, so I wonder what kind of work I will be able to do once I can actually see clearly!!
New photos on this site include pictures of the collaboration knife that I made with Jean-Paul Thevenot, of Dijon, France. This knife will be donated for the ABS auction, to be held at the 2008 Blade Show. There are two pictures of the knife on the Gallery page. One photo I took, the other was done by PointSeven Studios.
