We just got back from the Blade Show and a bit if vacationing. The Blade Show was great for me. I sold six knives and the collaboration knife that I made with Jean-Paul Thevenot got a lot of attention and admiration. Also, my name was drawn to make the Mastersmith knife for next year’s ABS auction.
After the Blade Show, Mary and I drove down to Savannah, GA to visit Mary’s cousins Andy and Tina. We spent a couple of days there and went into Savannah to see the historic district. We took a carriage ride through the historic residential area and spent some time on the Savannah River waterfront. We also went on a boat tour of the harbor and port. We then drove up to Charleston, SC. In Charleston we took another carriage ride through the historic district and also spent hours walking through the area. The old homes there are spectacular to see, but the weather was very hot and humid for walking. On our last day in Charleston, we took a tour boat out to Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter sets in the mouth of Charleston Harbor and was the target of the first shots of the civil war. There is only about one fourth of the original fort remaining. The Confederate forces pounded the fort with a 34 hour artillery barrage at the start of the war. Later, the Union forces fired 40,000 canon rounds at the fort to drive the Confederate occupiers out. You can still see canon balls and artillery rounds embedded in the walls of the fort. The only part of the fort remaining is the lower circle of canon emplacements. Original canons still set where they were left after the civil war. I was amazed to see how small and cave-like the bunkers were that contained huge canons. One can only imagine what it must have been like for the soldiers who fired those canons. The noise and concussion from the muzzle blast must have been horrendous in such a confined space.
I have added another knife show to my schedule. I will be attending the A.G. Russell Knife Event, August 16th & 17th 2008, in Rogers, Arkansas. This makes four shows that I have scheduled in the months of August and September. I’m going to be very busy this summer getting knives made for all of these shows and also working on custom orders. I will post up information about what I am making for the shows in future newsletters.
