July, 2010 The Blade Show didn't turn out to be so special; in my opinion anyway. However, this view was expressed by many of the table-holders that I spoke to. Attendance by the public was way down from previous years. Sales were slow too. The knives that did sell were the very high end and also the lower price range. The knives priced between $500 to $2,000 were slow movers. Of course, that was where my knives were priced. As we often do, Mary and I turned the Blade Show excursion into a vacation trip. After the Blade Show, we drove to Biloxi, MS and spent a couple of days at the Beau Rivage Resort. We had a great time sightseeing in that area. Next, we drove down US Highway 90 (the Gulf Coast Highway) to New Orleans. We spent an afternoon and evening in the French Quarter and on Bourbon Street. Mary had never been to New Orleans, so it was an entirely new experience for her. She was rather amazed at the happenings on Bourbon Street. I was only on Bourbon Street once, when I was 17 years old; an interesting, but long story. Suffice it to say that it was a new world for a 17 year old country boy to visit. We next ventured to Vicksburgh, MS to see the civil war battle site there. On the site is the remains of a Union iron-clad gunboat. The boat was sunk in the Yazoo River during the war. It was recovered in the 1960s and restored. A very interesting site for history buffs. From Vicksburgh, we made our way into Louisiana, were we encountered a tremendous thunderstorm and torrential rain. We were on a small two lane highway in the country when we drove into the storm. We crept along in the blinding rain until we reached a little town and took shelter under the awning at an abandoned filling station. Then, a nearby strike of lightening set off the towns tornado sirens. At least that is what we believed, as the sirens only sounded for about 30 seconds. An eternity when you have no idea where to seek shelter from a tornado. We eventually made our way home, having traveled a total of just over 2,600 miles. In all, a good time. I am currently working of pieces for the A. G. Russell Show. I am again working on the dagger with the wrapped handle. Work on it is going very well, so I should have it finished soon. I will post photos on this site as soon as it is done. I expect to have on my table the two knives pictured on the "Available" page. I may try to build something else for the show, but I do have some orders to complete soon. So, I need to make a decision about what is priority. Hope to see you at the A.G. Russell Show!
